The new Smart ENVE System (SES) ENVE 5.6 rim-brake road rim is due to land in the UK imminently, completing the tubeless compatible SES series. A limited quantity of clincher rims will be delivered for stock, but I would advise potential clients to Pre-Order immediately to be among the first in the UK to receive a hand-built set of these new aero weapons.
This is an evolution in shape over the original, non-tubeless compatible ENVE 4.5 rim. Raced in tubular rim format by Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka throughout the 2018 Tour de France, it is aerodynamically faster and more stable in challenging wind conditions than its predecessor and should prove to be the ultimate road racing wheel.
Jake Pantone of ENVE USA states:
“While the bulk of SES development has swung towards disc brakes in recent years, we’ve spent the better part of the last 11 years refining the art of carbon brake track design and continue to do so today. As such, we believe that riders who are on the fence about a disc brake upgrade should consider the additional performance available by upgrading to an ENVE SES rim brake wheelset versus buying a new disc bike without ENVE wheels. Specifically, the SES ENVE 5.6 offers more speed, more stability, and inspires confidence unlike any other wheelset we’ve produced to date, it’s the pinnacle of road racing rim technology.”
This all new, medium-depth aero rim has design features which bring it into line with the existing SES series rims. With depths of 54mm front and 63mm rear, the rim geometries are also completely different, being wider at the front than the rear. This approach has been proven to maximise crosswind stability at the front of the bike while reducing drag in the airflow to the rear of the bike. The textured braking surface remains: ensuring excellent performance in wet or dry conditions.
Aerodynamically designed to be run with a 25c tyre, the wide profiles of the ENVE 5.6 mean extremely low tyre pressures can be run even with inner tubes. Overall this improves comfort on the bike and reduces rolling resistance.
